I finally did it. I took the leap into a new career. After spending my last 5 years as a graphic designer in Marketing and Communications roles, I enjoyed my work but felt very stagnant and soulless in my jobs. And while I hope to continue designing as a freelancer and for personal projects, I have decided to change paths and move into education. I have always enjoyed working with kids: as entertainers at parties and my Christmas jobs as Santa's elf. Returning to uni has always been in the pipeline too and now I feel that step closer. I have currently secured work as a Teaching Assistant in a reception class and have the opportunity to gain experience in the field. I hope to apply for my masters in some years to come but for now I would like to dedicate my time to assisting in classrooms and supporting the kids in their development. So far I love the role, it involves a lot of standing, plotting around and dealing with 4 year old quarrels like "she doesn't want to be my best friend" - which is adorable, and I really enjoy getting to know the individual kids and their personalities. If you are ever looking for a career change, seize the moment. A lot of people questioned my reason for leaving my last job and thought it a wrong move for me to take, but honestly, life is short and if you have the opportunity to do something you enjoy, then go for it!
